Introducing SGW Collections: Sam Glankoff + Wendy
Wendy Snyder has long felt a passion and a sense of mission about the work of the American Master, artist Sam Glankoff. Her desire was to "spread the beauty" so that everyone had the opportunity to live with the luminous colors and “monumental quiet” of a "Glankoff".
Wendy Snyder worked closely with Sam Glankoff for four years, studying his print-painting method, recording their conversations, and filming him (Rearranging Short Dreams) in his small one-room apartment-studio on East 33rd Street in New York. With his reticent permission, Snyder curated Glankoff's first solo exhibition at the Graham Gallery in 1981, his first exhibition since the 1920s, when Glankoff participated in the first Whitney Studio Club group shows. From October 1981 until his death in April 1982, Sam Glankoff surprised her by altering his works’ signature SG imprint, adding the "W" for "Wendy”.
An artist and weaver by training, soon to become head of the Robert Kidd Weaving Studio in Birmingham, MI, at age 21; at 22, she was hired to create a resource library for the 40 Interior Architects at Neuhaus and Taylor (3D /International) in Houston. Soon after that, she was hired to come to NYC as an East Coast representative for Knoll Textiles. Within a year she was able to transition to fashion, a life-held dream, and became a fashion stylist. Within a few years, she was elevated to contributing editor at German Vogue Magazine.
Weaving, Interior Architecture and Fashion, all prepared her to manifest SGW Collections with the eye towards the world of interior design.
Having been a professional weaver, creating carpets and tapestries was her first vision. But the challenge soon revealed that the actual carpet industry was similar to the fashion industry…each year launching a new color trend. Changing the color of Glankoff’s original works, she felt, was not her privilege to decide. So that idea was dashed… for the moment.
Then came the idea to create reproductions of Glankoff’s works, to make the work affordable, so that everyone could live with a Glankoff. To achieve this, Snyder asked some of New York's most esteemed interior designers and architects, who had long been admirers of Glankoff's art, to select images from the Estate that would be reproduced as museum-quality archival art prints: Designers Pick — The SGW Collections.
